Around Rutland
What shall we do today?
We are a short walk from the village of Whissendine with its village shop, windmill and pub. The shop is well-stocked with groceries and essentials, it boasts an off-licence and post-office facilities. The White Lion Inn is a fabulous dog-friendly village pub, it has a varied menu for the bar and restaurant and also has 8 en-suite rooms. (Other dog-friendly pubs in Rutland) Whissendine Windmill is not to be missed. In exchange for a small donation to the Windmill Fund, Nigel will set the sails and treat you to a fascinating tour. His organic flour is used by many local businesses (including Dickinson & Morris Pork Pies). It’s sold in our shop too! Just a mile in the opposite direction from the campsite is Northfield Farm Shop Greendale is an ideal base for walking, cycling, bird watching, photography, eating out, heritage, and of course Rutland Water. This huge scenic reservoir has several nature reserves and is famous for the breeding osprey project. Water sports; fly fishing; cycling and walking are popular around Rutland Water, and the new seasonal aqua-park is well-worth a visit. The campsite is four miles from Oakham & six miles from Melton Mowbray, both are market towns of great character and history. Visit Oakham for culture, history, eating out and quaint individual shops. Visit Melton Mowbray for farmers’ markets, pork pies and regular high-street shopping. Stamford is a 25 minute drive (15 miles) but it has lots to offer in the way of culture, history, shopping and dining.
